Next-gen iPhone to feature in-cell touch panel displays? [Rumor]

We’re sure that both Apple’s fans and detractors are wondering what could Apple put out this year for their next-generation iPhone. Assuming Digitimes’ sources are to be believed, it looks like Apple could be working with both Sharp and Toshiba at putting out an iPhone that adopts the use of in-cell touch panel displays. This would ultimately lead to a much thinner and possibly lighter iPhone.

For those wondering, in-cell touch panel display merges the LCD layer and the touchscreen layer together. This would remove the need for a glass substrate that essentially separates the LCD from its touch layer on regular devices. However Apple has had some problems with Sharp in the past over display issues, whereby Sharp was reportedly unable to meet Apple’s standards thus causing unnecessary delays. In any case Digitimes has been more miss than hit as of late, so we wouldn’t place too much hope in this rumor for now.
