A while back we reported that a developer evangelist from Microsoft named Nuno Silva said that all current Windows Phone devices would get the upgrade to the upcoming Windows 8. While that was touted as a plausible rumor, after only a few hours, we have found that other sources have heard otherwise. A report from The Verge has indicated that an anonymous source allegedly close to Microsoft has said that there will be no upgrade path from Mango to Apollo. This shed a little more light on what said by Microsoft, “We have stated publicly that all apps in our Marketplace today will run on the next version of Windows Phone. Beyond that, we have nothing to share about future releases.”
While this is not the best of news to hear especially if you have just purchased the Nokia Lumia 900 or any other Windows Phone for that matter, it does also mean that the upcoming Windows 8 Apollo OS might be looking at a drastic change in its features . That might point to a “has to get worse before it gets better” kind of deal. Of course now that you have either side of the story, you can come up with your own conclusion but as a reminder, both statements were not official so both statements should be taken with the respective amount of salt. What advantages could Apollo have to not allow Windows Phone Mango to make the jump? Let us know if you have any ideas with a comment below.
