LG Display mass produces first e-paper display in the world

LG Display has scored yet another first in the industry – by rolling out the first plastic e-paper display in the world on a large scale basis. This plastic electronic paper display (EPD) will see action mainly in the e-book sector, although I am quite sure that some enterprising mind out there is also capable of figuring out yet another way of getting the job done. This 6″ XGA display at 1024 x 768 resolution will rely on e-ink to show off whatever is meant to be shown, and is tipped to usher in a new revolution in the e-book market thanks to the number of advancements introduced in terms of functionality and design.

LG Display’s efforts with the plastic EPD is said to deliver a paper-like reading experience thanks to a plastic substrate which is as slim as cell phone protection film, while sporting a flexible design that lets the reader bend it at a range of 40 degrees from the center of the screen. It is also 0.7mm thin, making it 33% slimmer compared to the current glass EPD, while being half the weight at just 14 grams. Not only that, LG has upped the ante in terms of durability, putting the plastic EPD through the paces by experiencing repeated drop tests from 1.5m above the ground without any scratches or breakage as a result. No idea on when will we see the mass-produced plastic EPD from LG Display in action, but there are whispers that next month is a good bet.
