RIM sets up Blackberry servers in Mumbai, India
RIM’s Blackberry servers are mainly located back in Canada where the company is based, and for the most part no one really seems to mind. However certain countries such as India do have an issue with where the servers are located, especially since this means that the government will not be able to monitor BBMs and emails being sent. For those unfamiliar with the situation, this is not new as RIM has had issues with India’s government in the past where the government has demanded access to the BBM data.
To placate the government, RIM has compromised and made certain proposals that seems to have appeased the government and avoided getting their services banned, but now it looks like they might have finally caved in and have placed 5,000 BES servers right smack in Mumbai. The servers have since been inspected by officials and permission to allow direct monitoring is “expected to be issued”.
