PlayStation Vita won’t play PS2 or PS3 games

PlayStation VitaAre you planning on getting your hands on Sony’s PlayStation Vita? The handheld console is set for a launch this coming Wednesday, the 22nd of February, and Sony has recently released a pretty extensive FAQ about the upcoming console which has also revealed that there are no plans to make the PlayStation Vita compatible with PlayStation 2, or PlayStation 3 titles at this point.

Q: Is PS Vita compatible with other PlayStation platform games like PS3, PS2, or PSP? Do you have any plan to support other PlayStation platforms in the future?

A: Users can play supported digital PSP titles and supported minis. In regard to PSone classics titles, we will announce further details when they are ready. PlayStation does not have plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point.

The good news, as revealed in the FAQ, is that select PlayStation One titles will be made available in due time, but for now it looks like both PS2 and PS3 titles are out. While it would have been awesome to be able to play PS2 and PS3 games on the Vita, we guess the hardware just isn’t there yet and effectively porting the games over might prove to be too much work. So, has the exclusion of PS2 and PS3 titles affected your decision to purchase the PS Vita, or were you more interested in PS Vita titles to begin with?
