NVIDIA, Qualcomm,TI to supply ARM processors for Windows 8 tablets?

Microsoft’s Windows 8 platform is expected to be both a desktop software and a mobile platform for tablet as well, and if Digitimes’ latest piece of rumor is to be believed, it seems that we can expect a variety of Windows 8 tablets that run on a variety of different processors from NVIDIA, Qualcomm and TI (Texas Instruments).

According to Digitimes’ sources from the upstream supply chain, Microsoft has tasked three major ARM processor manufacturers – NVIDIA, Qualcomm and TI – to pick two notebook partners each with for Windows 8 tablets. So far the pairings seem to have been Qualcomm with Samsung and Sony, TI with Toshiba and Samsung, and NVIDIA with both Acer and Lenovo.

The overlapping of Samsung between Qualcomm and TI is because both these ARM processor manufacturers are reportedly “fighting” over who gets to provide ARM processors for the Korean company. It should be noted that Digitimes has a pretty hit and miss record when it comes to these rumors, so it’s best taken with a grain of salt for now, especially since oddly enough it was reported that ASUS was being left out of this Windows 8 project given the company’s plans to release a Windows 8 tablet in 2012.
