Netherrealm Studios puts Mortal Kombat on hiatus

If you love fighting or action games, or if you’ve been playing console games for a long time, you’re probably pretty familiar with the Mortal Kombat franchise. The game was recently awarded the title of the best fighting game of 2011 at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, and if you were looking forward to more “best fighting game” goodness, you’ll be in for a disappointment.

According to developer Netherrealm Studios’ head Ed Boon, the studio is taking a hiatus from the Mortal Kombat franchise to work on a different project. What this also means is that no additional DLC for the recent Mortal Kombat will be released either. Ed Boon did not let on about the new project that his studio was working on, although given how Netherrealm Studios is owned by Warner Bros. Interactive, some are speculating that it might have something to do with a new Batman game.

The good news for fans of the Mortal Kombat franchise is that at least they did not kill it off. Hopefully that means that the series will be revived at a later date, but for now you might want to savor the recent Mortal Kombat for as long as you can, as it might be the last Mortal Kombat game for a while.
