Facebook app for Android update is in the works

The official Facebook app for Android has its fair share of bugs and unfortunately this has caused the user experience to be less than stellar, thus forcing Android owners to turn to alternative Facebook apps for their social networking needs. The good news is that thanks to these leaked screenshots above, it appears that Facebook is working at an update called “Katana”.

This update is expected to bring the current version of the app up to version 1.8 and will feature updated navigation, menu and search functionality. There’s even a standalone “Nearby” app as you can see in the right portion of the screenshot above. Could it have something to do with Facebook’s recent acquisition of Gowalla? That’s a bit hard to say for now, but what do you guys think of the new Facebook app redesign for Android?

No word on when this app will be ready for download, but hopefully the guys at Facebook have managed to sort out all the bugs (or as many as possible) and provide a better Facebook experience for Android users out there.
