Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 receives botched Honeycomb update

It seems like an update for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has been pushed out prematurely. Quite a number of folks who received the update discovered some problems with the update: while the update brings the tablet to Android 3.2 Honeycomb, it breaks the tablet’s WiFi capability – which is a huge deal for a WiFi-only device. However, some folks have found a workaround to this problem by connecting via a static IP address.

Other issues with the update include: problems connecting to Kies, “Firmware update failed. Please try installing using Kies (PC)…” message on boot, and auto-rotation not working anymore. Issuing a fix for the tablet is going to be a huge issue for Samsung, seeing how it can’t push it out through WiFi or Kies for the broken tablets. Hopefully a solution will come soon. In the meantime, for those of you who haven’t updated your tablet yet, it’d be a good idea to stay away from the update until it has been fixed.

Update 11/14 6:48pm PT: Samsung has contacted us with a statement: “Samsung is aware of an issue that some Galaxy Tab 10.1 customers have experienced with today’s software update. We are working on a resolution and will provide more information shortly. In the interim we have chosen to discontinue availability of the update.”
