RIM’s new BBX phones won’t look like the BlackBerry Bold

Back in October, RIM officially announced its next generation operating system – BBX, which was supposed to be the combination of the best parts of BlackBerry OS and QNX. But if you’re expecting BBX phones to look just like the current BlackBerry phones that you know now, you’re going to be way off the mark. According to an interview that Alec Saunders, RIM’s VP of Developer Relations and Ecosystem Development had with PCMag.com, the new BBX phones won’t look like the Bold at all.

Because the phones are based on the new operating system, they will have the same resolution and aspect ratio as the BlackBerry PlayBook which has a 16:9 ratio and a 1024 x 600 display. While it’s no 720p display, it should be pretty dense when used on a smaller sized screen. Apps built for the PlayBook will also run on BBX, so having the same aspect ratio and resolution should help things in that department.

No word on whether the first BBX phone will have a physical keyboard, but if it’s going to resemble a PlayBook, then it’s highly unlikely. We still don’t have an exact date for when we’ll be seeing BBX but RIM mentioned that the first BBX phones will be coming out early next year. We can’t wait to see what they have in store for us. Hopefully it won’t be too late by then.
