NFC chips can be used to detect counterfeit goods

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a technology that has only started gaining some traction in the country recently, and doesn’t really have too many uses at the moment. But, the number of things you can do with the technology is slowly increasing. The folks over at INSIDE Secure have come up with a new way to use of NFC: identifying original products.

Called VaultIC150, this low-cost turnkey solution is designed for high-end consumer or luxury products that are usually targeted by counterfeiters and cloners. All manufacturers have to do is incorporate the VaultIC150 chip into their products, and consumers can simply use an NFC-enabled phone to scan the product. After scanning the product, users will be able to tell if what they’re purchasing is an original product or not because imitation products won’t be carrying these chips.

The chips come with built-in banking-level security and even detectors, tampering monitors, illegal code execution prevention, and can detect tampering attempts (which it then destroys sensitive data itself, avoiding data confidentiality being compromised). We’re not sure how safe this security method is especially if people find a way to clone the NFC chips, but right now it sure sounds like a great idea.
