The singer/song-writer has recently launched his Sting 25 app, which is an app that accompanies his CD box set. The app contains photos, lyrics, interviews and concert footage. According to Sting, one of the perks of releasing an app is that it can constantly be updated, “so that it’s not a static thing, it’s organic.”
“People are going to stop buying CDs,” Sting told Billboard. “People are going to stop selling and making them, so I am looking for different ways to get music to people, and the [app] at the moment seems to be the favourite … The app is the new model.”
The music industry has seen a decline in sales of physical albums lately. This is due to the digital format being more preferred, plus there’s the case of piracy where listeners can just download songs instead of buying the album. Undoubtedly apps are the key for smartphones, with successful platforms such as iOS and Android boasting tens of thousands of apps. Could Sting be onto something here?
