HP ENVY New Generation

 

HP high-end notebook lineup will get three new models, the HP ENVY 15, HP ENVY 17 and HP ENVY 17 3D. The ENVY series was launched the first time in 2009 as a line of elegant and powerful notebooks to compete with the MacBook Pro.

I can say that since then, I am impressed by the progress the HP team has made on the design of each generation, by consistently improving the sleekness of the chassis’s edges, the elegance of the form factor and the quality of the build.

Design-wise the new ENVY offers a solid build and a new brushed aluminum texture decorated with a subtle thin red line around the keyboard, reminiscent of the Beats’ brand. The outside of the body is black and has traded the rounded edges of the previous model for much sleeker lines.

HP is leveraging the Beats brand to the maximum, using it in the design and pushing the envelope on the hardware by offering six speakers and a subwoofer. The addition of a new aluminum analog volume dial branded with the red “b” of Beats by Dr. Dre achieve to offer a very unique look and feel. (See close up photo).  You adjust the audio by running it and when you push on top of it, the Beats Audio Manager appears on the screen.

The HP ENVY features state-of-the-art Radiance backlit keyboard with brighter illumination using individual LEDs dedicated to each keycap. A proximity sensor activates the LEDs when it detects a hand approaching the laptop and turns them off when the user leaves.

According to HP, the Radiance displays offer higher resolution, richer color, 50 percent greater brightness than standard and wider viewing angles.

The ENVY line is powered by the latest Intel Core processors and AMD Mobility Radeon HD graphic processors. The starting configuration offers the Intel Core i5-2430M, while the high end version gets the Intel Quad Core.

Users are able to connect up to three external displays using HDMI and full-size DisplayPorts. The ENVY 17 support the option for a 128-gigabyte mSATA SSD and up to two 1-terabyte hard drives. On the battery life side, the ENVY 15 gets up to 9 while the ENVY 17 can achieve up to 9.5 hours.
