BMW heads-up display now in Technicolor

BMW has their next generation heads-up display (HUD) that will come in full color, where its sole purpose is to deliver just the right amount of information on top of your hood so that soon, your dashboard will be antiquated. According to BMW, the presence of a HUD will actually improve safety simply because it halves the time drivers need to look to the display and absorb all the information their eyes see. Not only that, this $1,300 feature is said to be introduced in the next generation BMW 3 Series from February 2012 onwards, making it accessible to virtually all BMW sedan models soon.

The new HUD displays from BMW will feature a navigation screen, speed and cruise control settings, not to mention warnings from BMW’s suite of driver aids such as lane departure warning, night vision pedestrian recognition, rear-end collision warning, and adaptive cruise control following distance.

Assuming you have the dough to sit in one of the sportier M series vehicles, chances are the HUD will also show off the tachometer and gear selection. I am not quite sure what happens when the electronics in the car fail, don’t you wish you had an analog meter after that time?
