Acer and ASUS scale back ultrabook production

The ultrabooks put out by both Acer and ASUS were originally intended to compete against Apple’s MacBook Air, with the hope that they could offer something better than the MacBook Air and give Apple a run for their money. As it turns out the sales of the first month’s ultrabooks by both Acer and ASUS did not perform to their satisfaction, thus causing both companies to scale back production of their ultrabook computers.

According to a report by Digitimes, both companies had originally planned to order 300,000 units, but have now scaled their orders back to somewhere between 150,000 and 180,000. The reason behind their lack of sales is apparently due to their design and their performance, which Digitimes is reporting could not match up to the MacBook Air.

Both companies are said to refocus their efforts come May 2012, which is when Intel’s Ivy Bridge processor comes out, and expect sales to surge in October of 2012 with the release of Windows 8. We guess we will have to wait and see if this plan will work out for them.
