It seems that Seamus McGarvey, who is the cinematographer for the 2012 movie The Avengers, was so impressed by the iPhone 4S’ camera capabilities that he actually took the phone and shot some footage of the movie using it! Those particular scenes can be found in the movie and the trailer in the video below.
With our cameras and phones getting better by the day, this doesn’t really come as a surprise. After all, there are some movies and shows (like one of the episodes of House MD) that are shot entirely on a DSLR camera. Here’s what Seamus McGarvey had to say about it:
“The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film.”
Update – As it turns out, Seamus McGarvey was misquoted and he did not actually use the iPhone 4S to shoot some scenes of The Avengers movie. He was simply talking about the range of new equipment that we have access to nowadays. Here’s his quote given to The Hollywood Reporter:
“I was talking about how up and coming film makers have access to a whole range of new technologies which expand our options as filmmakers. I mentioned that the iPhone and the Canon 5d Mk2 were devices currently used on many Hollywood productions. I used the Canon on some shots on Marvel’s The Avengers movie,” he stated to THR. “Unfortunately, this was edited to read that I shot some of the film with the iPhone. This is not true.”
