Sony Ericsson Q3 2011 results

Sony Ericsson has just unveiled its sales report for Q3 this year, and it looks like the cellphone making duo is doing pretty well for itself. The company managed to ship out 9.5 million handsets last quarter – a 25% increase over Q2’s 7.6 million units shipped. While it hasn’t shipped as many units as it did back in Q3 2010, this is because of the decline in feature shipments, with the company compensated with increase of smartphone sales instead. In fact, Sony Ericsson reported that its Android-based Xperia smartphones account for 80% of sales, with over 22 million Xperia smartphones shipped to date.

Another interesting to note is that Sony Ericsson’s President and CEO, Bert Nordbeg, mentioned that the company will be “shifting the entire portfolio to smartphones during 2012.” So say goodbye to all Sony Ericsson feature phones by the end of this year, don’t expect to see them from the company again.

Sony Ericsson has previously mentioned that it aims to be the world’s largest Android handset maker, so it makes sense that it intends to get rid of feature phones. But compared to the Android giants like HTC and Samsung, Sony Ericsson has been pretty low-key in the industry, churning out solid Android devices now and then, but never staying in the spotlight for too long.
