Sony Ericsson is now just Sony

I guess Ericsson has had enough of their partnership with Sony that does not seem to go anywhere where smartphones and feature phones are concerned, and this has caused Sony to seize the opportunity to purchase Ericsson’s share of Sony Ericsson. This in effect would turn Sony Ericsson into a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony, where it will be integrated into Sony’s broad platform of network-connected consumer electronics products. Do you expect the logo on the right to change after this?

Not only that, Ericsson will walk away 1.05 billion Euros richer with this amicable parting, although in exchange Sony will is now the proud new owner of a broad IP cross-licensing agreement and ownership of five essential patent families. I have a feeling this is a good move – Sony’s sense of design will most probably spill over onto the smartphone arena, and who knows – we might start to see more winners coming out for the Android camp after this.

Parting can be such sweet sorrow, but after 10 years, I would think that it is time the organization steps up and hopefully us consumers will be the clear winner in the end. [Press Release]
