Nissan’s 10 minute electric car charger

At the moment, if you want to open up a gas station as a business, life is good considering the turnaround time to fill up the tank of any vehicle that drives in. When it comes to electric cars however, the idea of an electric car charging station might not be too good – you’d have the same customers sitting there for 8 hours or so as they wait for their respective vehicle’s batteries to juice up. Nissan might change all that with their latest release, the 10 minute electric car charger that was developed in conjunction with Japan’s Kansai University.

It seems that the latter managed to come up with the necessary technology to juice up batteries used in vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi iMiEV in a record time of a mere ten minutes. This would definitely go a long way in pushing public acceptance of electric vehicles, which traditionally are hindered by sluggish charge times. How did they discover the breakthrough? Well, it was discovered that by changing the electrode inside a capacitor from carbon to tungsten oxide and vanadium oxide, the ability to retain power is improved, taking all of just ten minutes to juice up a particular battery with no significant effect on storage capacity or voltage.
