Blackfriars Bridge solar panel installation to be completed in 2012

The Blackfriars Bridge is a structure in London that was built in 1886, but it looks like come 2012, it will be getting an technological update that will merge a historical structure with some modern, environmentally friendly technology in the form of solar panels.

The work has already begun on what is touted to be the “world’s largest solar bridge”, which will see more than 4,400 solar panels being installed above the Blackfriars station platform. These solar panels are expected to help the station with their power supply and is said to be able to generate about 900,000kWh of electricity a year, which is about equivalent to half of the station’s energy consumption.

The solar panels are expected to take up about 6,000 square meters and is said to reduce annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 511 tonnes. No exact date of completion, but 2012 seems to be an estimate at the moment. Either way it looks like residents living in London can look forward to a greener station in 2012.
