The HP Pavilion dm1-4010us is an update of the previous model launched at CES 2011, the dm1-3020us. HP categorizes this new 11.6 inch notebook as an Ultraportable, which is different from the new Ultrabook category recently launched by Intel – to be labeled “Ultrabook”, the device should be thinner (0.83” for the dm1-4010us vs. 0.63” for the Toshiba Z830 , 0.58” for the Lenovo U300s and 0.68” for the MacBook Air).
Noticeable design enhancements have been made, based on HP’s MUSE design philosophy: the chassis offers a sleeker profile with well integrated IO ports, featuring a nice curve that swoops up on the rear just like a “modern sports car” says Jim Christensen, Director Media Relations, PSG Group, HP, “ and “having the name on the back goes along with the sports car idea” (see photos on the right and below in the complete article). HP uses the same swooping curves and clean lines across its latest business notebook lineup.
The new finish is, by far, the most innovative feature, called “HP Soft-touch Imprint”, it has a nice soft rubber feel, with a subtle imprinted pattern on a matte dark brown color.Check the photo gallery.
Over the past few years, HP has consistently put a lot of effort into its designs, and it is paying off in 2011: I am very impressed by the elegant design and the build quality of the latest HP laptops.
That is the reason why I was so surprised when, a few days ago, HP executives considered selling the PC business – aka PSG Group, a $40 billion business and a Fortune 60 company by itself. I am glad to know that the board decided to go for a spin off instead, separating the IT/enterprise division from its personal computing devices business.
The decision was wise since it provides a better chance for the #1 PC vendor in the world to remain innovative “like a startup”, as it is promoted in the HP ads, which, if it happens, would be very beneficial for consumers.
On the hardware side, there are very few changes: the previous model featured the AMD Fusion APU E-350, the new dm1-4010us will come in two flavors, one with the AMD E-300 (slower) and the other will run the AMD E-450 (faster). Models with Intel Core 2nd generation processors will launch later. AMD models also include the AMD Radeon HD integrated GPU.
On the software side, HP has developed the HP Premier Experience, a combination of software and hardware innovations that makes applications easier to find; and bootup and wake-up times are shorter. Additionally, it offers high quality audio with HP Beats Audio, high definition image capture with HP TrueVision HD webcam and better control of the cooling (with Coolsense technology) when using the laptop on the lap.
Fast bootup and wake-up
According to HP, the entire “startup experience” (from completely off to being able to run an app) has been reduced from 7 minutes to 4 minutes (which doesn’t seem fast). Now, the dm1-4101us wakes-up almost instantly from sleep mode (signaled by the blinking light) when you open it. The device goes in hibernation only when the remaining battery life is less than 10%.
HP Launch Box
HP custom-designed the Windows start menu with additional folders with obvious names that is supposed to help users find programs faster. To provide a better way to organize application shortcuts on the start screen, the manufacturer also created the HP Launch Box for quick access from the Windows 7 taskbar.
Available only on selected models, the following HP Premier Experience features:
–HP CoolSense technology uses the accelerometer to detect when the notebook is on the lap, cooling it down for more comfort.
– HP QuickWeb takes users directly to the web within seconds of powering on, bypassing the full operating system start-up.
– HP ProtectSmart uses the built-in accelerometer that detects shocks, and locks the hard drive into place within milliseconds to help protect important files.
– HP SimplePass provides online security with a built-in fingerprint reader that auto-populates passwords for online accounts and websites.
