Crytek has announced that they will be releasing their CryENGINE 3 SDK to developers, and the best part is that the SDK will be free! However the catch is that it has to be used for developing games/mods for non-commercial use.
It will feature CryENGINE 3’s Sandbox level editor which is a “What you see is what you play” tool that the company claims was designed by, and for professional gamers. The SDK will come with documentation and Crytek has promised that updates will be provided regularly.
For those who may have plans to take their creations commercial and start charging a fee, Crytek is offering a royalty-free license model, where 20% of the developer’s revenues will go to Crytek from the game’s launch. Sounds pretty cool and we can’t wait to start seeing games/mods being pushed out that is running on CryENGINE 3.
For more information just head on down to Crydev.net and who knows, perhaps we might start to see CryENGINE 3 versions of Counter-Strike and Team Fortress Classic, both of which were highly success mods based on a heavily modified Quake engine.
