Chrome OS supports ZIP files now

Google’s Chrome OS takes a closer step to being a respectable operating system as it is now capable of supporting ZIP files – which might come across as a surprise to many considering how we have taken ZIP file support for granted all this while on Windows and OS X. Thankfully, Google’s engineers who are involved in the Chrome OS project know better and have an ear for what users want, tinkering with the built-in file browser for it to handle ZIP files as well.

This new ability can be obtained after Google rolled out a Dev Channel software update for the Samsung Series 5 and Google Cr-48 notebooks a couple of days ago. The update will also officially fix a problem with Pandora Internet radio, make sure Pepper Flash is updated, while fixing a bug which had prevented pop-up windows from being restored in the prim and proper manner.

Before taking advantage of the Dev Channel, you will need to use it first, opening a terminal and entering the right command to enable experimental_storage. Bear in mind that ZIP support is still a diamond in the rough, and is not quite ready for public consumption – yet. That day will come though.
