Senseg E-Sense technology lets you feel virtual textures

Computers are slowly but surely getting more and more interactive, starting from the use of color in displays, followed by the introduction of soundcards, surround sound, and various multimedia abilities. Well, fast forward to today and touch-sensitive devices are all the rage, but it is safe to say that most of them are dependent on mechanical vibrations in place of tactile sensation. Finnish company Senseg intends to up the ante with their E-Sense technology.

Senseg’s E-Sense technology will rely on an electro-sensory phenomenon which is said to replicate the feeling of texture, regardless of what kind of touch interface surface you use. Mechanical vibration has been kicked out of the picture, replaced with electric fields instead that will be positioned on the display. You can feel rough, smooth, curved, flat, sticky, and slippery sensations among others, although we do wonder just how realistic that feeling would be.

I can just imagine the porn industry taking to this technology like a duck to water, and you can probably leave it to them to bring it to the next level before other usage (like in games) will capitalize it. What other use of E-Sense technology do you think can be applied in everyday life?
