If you’ve ever watched the pros play RTS (real time strategy) games like Starcraft, Warcraft and Command & Conquer, you will see frenzied clicking and typing on the mouse and keyboard, and you should also start hearing terms and phrases like “micro managing” and “APM” (actions per minute).
However if playing RTS games on a traditional keyboard and mouse computer setup is not for you, perhaps gaming on a 20-foot-wide multitouch display might be something you could be interested in.
The game in question is called Fleet Commander and it is based off the Star Wars universe and is developed by computer science grad student Arthur Nishimoto. Under development over a course of several years, the game was designed to “explore how a real-time interactive strategy game that would typically rely on complex keyboard commands and mouse interactions [could] be transferred into a multi-user, multitouch environment.” The movement and gesture of the fingers will be tracked by the TacTile software.
Sounds pretty cool, doesn’t it? We can only hope that such technology in terms of gaming will start being made available for the masses soon. Check out the video for a demonstration of the game in action.
