NTT DoCoMo looks to renewable energy to power its cellphone tower network

When it comes to energy, it is a zero sum game, so to harness every single bit in the most efficient manner possible without harming the environment ought to be the goal for most companies. This has resulted in solar-powered vehicles and electric cars, but are there other areas in life where clean, renewable energy sources could be put to good use? NTT DoCoMo thinks so, as Japan’s largest cellphone operator, they intend to  power their vast array of cellphone tower networks using nothing but renewable energy including solar, wind or biomass.

In the future, this move might even benefit the planet on the whole, as the company might end up with excess electricity being fed back to the grid due to advancement in technology and a higher efficiency rate. Not only that, such a green move might act as a safeguard during power grid outages just in case a natural disaster happens. 

Currently, NTT DoCoMo has a “collection” of 90,000 cellphone relay stations, and they will kickstart their project by constructing 10 renewable energy facilities next year as a supplement to conventional electricity supply. Being in Japan, NTT DoCoMo will ensure that these energy facilities will be as earthquake-proof as possible. The rest of the world could make do with similar developments, don’t you think so?
