Apacer announces new industrial SD card for embedded systems

While most SD cards are good enough for a wide range of consumers, Apacer has announced a new type of SD card that’s been designed for use in embedded systems in harsh environments.  No word on what these SD cards will be called, but they will be compliant with the Ver. 2.0 standard and SDHC Class 10 high-speed transmission so there’s no need for hardware manufacturers to create new SD readers to take advantage of these cards.

What makes these SD cards stand out from the rest is that they are touted to have high reliability, high storage, and resistance to extended temperatures.  This allows the SD cards to function in harsh environments just like the devices they will be plugged into (expect them to be use in rugged tablets, phones and notebooks). The cards will be available in 256MB to 8GB capacities, with read/write speeds of 20/13 MB per second. No word on when we’ll be seeing them on the market, but we’re sure professionals who need SD cards in harsh environments will welcome them with open arms.
