Android malware DroidDream Light spotted over the weekend

Android users, it appears that over the weekend, more Android malware has made its way to the Android Market. Given the frequency of malware popping up for Android, we really shouldn’t be surprised. The infected apps have already been taken off the market by Google, although we hope that Google will start being more proactive, rather than reactive, when it comes to these issues.

The malware in question is a variant of the DroidDream Light, and it was found in apps with seemingly legit titles, namely:

• Quick FallDown
• Scientific Calculator
• Bubble Buster
• Best Compass & Leveler (there’s actually a legit app by the same name!)

Frighteningly enough, it looks like those apps have been downloaded at least over 1,000 times, with some reaching 5,000 downloads, which means there are quite a few Android users out there who may have already been infected.

The malware apparently has the capability to make the infected device visit specific URLs, which we’re guessing are more than likely to be malicious and could even contain Trojans, download applications, update the malware itself, and even initiate app downloads.

If you think you might have been infected, you can always download a mobile security app to help you remove the malware and stay safe from future attacks. Checking app reviews and ratings, and staying away from dubious third party app stores will also go a long way in ensuring the safety of your device.
