PHOTON 4G is Motorola’s first 4G phone for Sprint

At the Sprint Motorola event today, the two companies announced the launch of a new high-end phone: the Motorola PHOTON 4G. Previously named the Droid X 2 before it was officially announced, the PHOTON 4G marks Motorola’s impressive 4G debut on Sprint’s WiMAX network.

The PHOTON 4G packs a dual-core 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, a 4.3″ qHD display, dual cameras – 8-megapixel rear, VGA front, access to the Android Market, Sprint ID compatibility for easy customization of the device, 16GB of onboard memory with an SD card slot for up to an additional 32GB, Worldphone capabilities for use all over the world, 3G/4G Mobile hotspot capability, the ability to connect to a dock, turning the phone into a laptop ala the Atrix 4G (though we’re not sure if the PHOTON 4G will be using the same dock) and enterprise features loaded onto the phone.

No word on pricing yet, but the phone will be out this summer. Stay tuned for more details and our first impression of the Motorola PHOTON 4G (image in extended post).
