Elite UK Police Agency Hit By LulzSec

Yesterday the hacker group LulzSec announced that they have teamed up with hacktivists Anonymous to bring down government and banking websites and it looks like they have kept true to their word in a tweet saying “Tango down – soca.gov.uk – in the name of #AntiSec”.

For those who are wondering the website in question belongs to the UK’s elite police force, the Serious Organised Crime Agency got taken offline in a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Looks like things have gotten serious (pun intended). As it stands LulzSec has already managed to take down the FBI and the CIA and now Soca, websites which we assume would have pretty tight security but whose flaws have now been pointed out by LulzSec.

A statement that a Soca spokesperson gave to the BBC said “Soca has chosen to take its website offline to limit the impact of DDoS attack on other clients hosted by our service provider. The Soca website is a source of information for the general public which is hosted by an external provider. It is not linked to our operational material or the data we hold.”

LulzSec had this to say – “DDoS is of course our least powerful and most abundant ammunition. Government hacking is taking place right now behind the scenes.”
