PlayStation 3

For those of you who’ve been holding out on purchasing a PlayStation 3, we’ve got some good news for you. The folks over at Andriasang reported on a tip that a video game shop employee was given about the upcoming PlayStation 3. It will have the model number CECH-3000, and packs some minor changes from the current PlayStation 3. The console will have a 320GB hard disk, its power consumption decreased from 230W to 200W, and its weight reduced from 3.0kg to 2.6kg.

Changes in appearance include different power and eject buttons, the addition of a textured side, optional LED lamps and more that weren’t mentioned. The console will be priced the same as the current PlayStation 3 model and will be shipped out to retailers once the existing stock runs out. No images have been released, but I’m pretty stoked to see how this new PlayStation 3 will look like.

Update (5.46PM PT): the new PlayStation 3 has been officially confirmed. Everything mentioned in the previous report turned out to be true (lighter weight, lower power consumption) except for any changes to its physical appearance. It is said to come with AACS copyright protection, which means Blu-ray movies will only be played at 480i when not using HDMI (i.e. you won’t get Full HD 1080p output when using an analog connection). A cheaper 160GB model is expected to be released as well.
