Twitter won’t be protecting its users from CTB
Remember the footballer, “CTB”, who took action against Twitter and the 75,000 Tweeters who mentioned his name after being granted a privacy injunction? It has been reported that Twitter’s general manager of Twitter UK, Tony Wang announced that the company will hand over details of users to authorities if required – suggesting that Twitter is more interested in maintaining users’ rights of an injunction rather than the privacy rights of those that use the service.
According to Wang, the most that Twitter can do to help is “give users notice of requests so they have opportunity to defend themselves.”
Seeing how all you need is an email address to create a new Twitter account, having the details to all those Twitter accounts might only give CTB a handful of useful information. Let’s not forget that the legal system involved is in the UK, while the Twitter users being sued could be anywhere in the world. It’s going to be interesting to see how this case plays out. Stay tuned for more details.
