It was just last week we reported about the world’s smallest camera – the Awaiba NanEye camera that’s smaller than a matchstick with dimensions of 1mm x 1mm x 1.5mm. Well that title has been short lived, with a new camera on the block touting to be even smaller than the NanEye. Medigus has just unveiled to the world a camera that is just 0.99mm wide – a fraction of a millimeter smaller than the previous camera, but in the world of endoscopic devices, it means a lot.
The Medigus miniature camera is designed for diagnostic and surgical procedures where larger scopes can’t be used i.e. in fields like cardiology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, genecology, otolaryngology, bronchoscopy, and robotic surgery. The camera makes use of a dedicated 0.66mm x 0.66mm CMOS sensor to provide high resolution images at 45,000 pixels.
No word on pricing yet, but the cameras are supposed to be mass produced and cheap enough to function as disposable cameras – which eliminates the need for having to sterilize them. Expect the cameras to be used in the medical field soon enough. Now we’re just waiting for someone to come up with a 0.98mm-wide camera to claim the title again.
