It has taken the better part of the last two years in terms of design and engineering by by Canonical and the Ubuntu community to roll out everything found inside Ubuntu 11.04. No idea on how much of a negative impact it will make on Windows’ sales where operating systems are concerned, but at the very least it offers a decent operating system alternative which is free and not gimped.
Taking advantage of modern graphics to provide a visually rich interface for the PC, Ubuntu 11.04 is inspired by smartphone and tablet design thinking. Older PCs will see Ubuntu determining if their graphics card supports Unity automatically, and will deliver instead a “classic” experience when the machine is not beefy enough. Of course, even if Unity is supported, you can always opt for the classic desktop experience for familiarity or consistency. How many Ubuntu users read us?
