Now we all know that Nintendo won’t be releasing any in-house developed games this spring, but what does it all mean? In an interesting analysis posted up on Kotaku, Nintendo’s drought of games might actually be the opposite of their developers taking a well-deserved break from pumping out new games for their current consoles (3DS, DS, and Wii). According to the data of Nintendo’s game release history for the past 10 years (which Kotaku has compiled into nice bar charts) the drought seems to point in the direction of the release of a new Nintendo console. Reminiscent of the drought of 2002, when the Gamecube was released, the analysis strongly suggests that we’ll be seeing a Wii 2 (or whatever Nintendo’s next console will be called) launched this spring.
If history repeats itself, the drought of games could actually signify Nintendo developers hard at work to produce the titles to be unveiled at the Wii 2’s launch – just like the games drought that occurred when the Gamecube was released.
However, as convincing as the theory seems, it’s worth knowing that most of it has been based on something that happened almost 10 years ago so take it with a pinch of salt. Either way, you can take comfort in knowing that if there is going to be a launch for a new console – you won’t have to wait too long. But don’t throw out your Wii console just yet; it still has some life left in it.
