Kinect adds more value to teleconferencing
While broadband connectivity as well as the leaps made in the realm of technology has certainly made teleconferencing possible, it has yet to achieve a level where everyone is happy with the results just yet, but this isn’t to discourage the efforts of folks over at Skype and others. Boffins over at the MIT Media Lab managed to take hold of the Kinect, harnessing its powers of depth and human perception in oder to develop a new kind of videoconferencing functionality. First of all, you are able to blur out everything on the display, while the speaker remains focused. If fancy is the name of the game, then you can also freeze a frame of yourself in the still-moving video feed whenever you need to attend to something else off-camera, while dropping 3D-aware augmented reality on your viewers at the same time. Interesting idea, and we are quite sure Microsoft didn’t really know that their Kinect could be “exploited”, and in a good way, in so many methods.
