Awaiba NanEye camera is super small

Honey, I shrunk the camera – at least that is what Awaiba’s claim to fame is, rolling out a camera which is smaller than a matchstick head, now how about that for the wonders of miniaturization in our modern world? Awaiba’s NanEye camera is touted to be the smallest digital camera in the world, where it was specially built straight onto a silicon chip. Even when you include its super small glass lens, it measures a mere 1mm x 1mm x 1.5mm in height. To put things into perspective, that is roughly the same size as that of a pinhead (not of Hellraiser fame), or for the hungry, a large grain of sea salt.

This is definitely an improvement in the right direction where camera technology is concerned, and it could lead to even more interesting applications – although those who are suspicious of their spouse and partners might wish this tech makes it to the mainstream market sooner rather than later so that they can run some covert operations of their own. 

These pinhead cameras will first see action in endoscopic devices, including those rather serpentine cables that doctors love to make use of in order to check out what’s happening in your colon or lung without having to cut you up and sew you back again later on. Awaiba is currently working with researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration in Germany to further improve the NanEye camera.
