Android beats iPhone over number of free apps

Apart from Android overtaking iOS in terms of adoption rate, we now have another piece of news that will surely raise the flame wars between both camps up by another notch – app store analytics provider Distimo’s latest published report points toward the pricing of mobile applications across a range of platforms, and in the process discovered that folks rocking to Google’s Android Market will have 134,342 free applications for download, whereas others who are sticking to the tried-and-true Apple App Store will see their iPhone be on the receiving end of 121,845 free applications.

Of course, when you are talking about the total number of paid applications that are available in Android Market, it pales in comparison to the Apple App Store, numbering around one-third of what Cupertino offers.

Distimo says that the App Store for iPhone is still by far and large, the largest store in terms of all applications available, although its growth has somewhat slowed to a crawl where relative growth is concerned in March earlier this year. Distimo is looking at Android Market becoming the largest store in terms of number of applications before the year is over – and this will happen only if current grow rates across all different application stores continue in their present direction.
