Three arm illusion to help advance prosthetics field
Boffins over at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden knows that it is very rare for anyone to be born with three arms in tow, but have managed to prove that one is able to experience a similar sensation in a very interesting manner. Their study has managed to prove that it is possible to generate enough stress in volunteers who have been threatened with a kitchen knife being driven into a prosthetic arm that the brain actually recognizes the presence of that prosthetic limb, under controlled laboratory conditions, of couse. So ultimately, what would be the benefit of such a study? Well, it might help create new applications in prosthetic research, since one might be able to help future paralyzed patients “feel” in the so-called dead zones of their body.
