Samsung first off the blocks with mass production of transparent LCD panels
Samsung is proud to be the first major manufacturer in the world to mass produce transparent LCD panels that are 22″ in size from this month onwards. These transparent displays will sport a wide range of use that will be able to deliver both information and help people communicate efficiently. There will be two flavors to choose from – a black-and-white type and the color model, although they share a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) resolution. When placed side-by-side against conventional LCD panels which rely on back light unit (BLU) and come with 5% transparency, where Samsung’s transparent LCD panel is capable of offering the world’s best transparency rate (at point of publishing, of course) of more than 20% for the black-and-white type and over 15% for the color type. Basically, you can look through the panel like glass, while having it consume 90% less juice compared to a conventional LCD panel that relies on a back light unit. Will we see transparent LCD TVs at CES next year? [Press Release]
