Item-level RFID tags get support from major retailers

If you’re fussy about privacy and not fond of Big Brother, then this probably is bad news for you. ABI Research has released a report stating that more than three-quarters of a billion RFID tags will be used in global apparel markets in 2011 and big players such as Walmart, Macy’s and JC Penney will be supporting this. Item-level tracking isn’t a new concept at all, but when you’ve got big players such as Walmart supporting it, the system is expected to grow as much as 60 percent in the next three years. Apparently inventory and security are the driving factors behind the adoption of RFIDs though consumers will probably be more concerned about letting others figure out their shopping habits.
