RIM PlayBook sees monthly production of 200,000 units

Not exactly the most optimistic news to begin the day with – the BlackBerry PlayBook will apparently see a production of around 200,000 units each month, according to part manufacturers. It seems that production has already begun over at Quanta, where it has hit a range of between 150,000 and 200,000 per month. This would definitely leave RIM a whole lot more cautious than before, when they previously thought of rolling out one million units in time for a March release. Apparently, this tightening figure could be due to RIM being extremely strict about its production and intends to avoid a potential banana skin in the form of China-made clones that happened with the iPad from Apple. Since manufacturing will happen in Taiwan instead of China, this tactic will apparently prevent generic white-box companies from obtaining blueprints and also safeguard the “security specifications” that RIM employs. Logically speaking, this means RIM cannot achieve the targeted 6 million units worth of sales by this year.
