Lexar’s SDXC memory card can store 128GB of data
[CES 2011] Lexar will be unveiling their upcoming SDXC card at CES 2011 this week, and will be putting them on sale later this quarter. Targeted at professionals, Lexar’s SDXC memory cards will have capacities of 64GB and 128GB. With most consumer devices now only supporting up to 32GB SD cards, it’s probably going to be awhile before these cards become standard, but for now they will remain as products for professionals. The SDXC cards will also feature a 133x speed rating (read/write of 20MB/second). With their SDXC memory cards, Lexar is narrowing the gap between SD and CompactFlash cards in terms of storage capacity, but they are still largely outclassed when it comes to speed. At the moment CF cards can have read/write speeds of up to 600X (90MB/s), and the next version of CF cards are intended to reach speeds of 500MB/s. But SD cards have been proven more popular especially their Mini and Micro sizes that are used in smartphones and tablets. It’ll only be a matter of time before one format renders the other obsolete – or maybe they can co-exist peacefully. What do you think?
