LG has just announced the launch of the LG Optimus 2X, a Tegra-powered cousin of the LG Star. The phone features 8GB of storage, a 4-inch WVGA display and a 1500mAh battery. Because it is powered by NVIDIA’s 1GHz Tegra processor, it can decode 1080p movies without a sweat (NVIDIA has demonstrated that many times). It can also display that content on the internal display and to an HDTV via HDMI. While LG touts the “dual-core” nature of Tegra to explain the performance, but I explain it by pure multimedia processing power and well-tuned drivers. Other dual-core processors will come to the market, and it will be fun to compare them head to head. The Optimus 2X will be available in Korea next month, and hit the rest of the world shortly after that – although “when exactly” is unknown for now. With Tegra, LG might have simply leaped over Samsung’s mobile processor division in one fell swoop.
