Chevrolet Volt uses recycled parts from Deepwater Horizon oil spill clean-up materials
If you have a heart for the environment, chances are you’re already driving an electric or hybrid vehicle. For owners of the Chevrolet Volt, you can wear a smug grin knowing that GM recently announced that said vehicle in production will feature parts made from recycled Deepwater Horizon oil spill clean-up materials. Approximately 100 miles of plastic boom, the material used to help contain the oil spill, will be recycled to create plastic, under-the-hood parts for the current generation of Volts. GM itself will use around 100,000 pounds of plastic boom that will be turned into deflectors around the vehicle’s radiator. Now isn’t this one great example of creative recycling? There really is a silver lining to every cloud, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that other companies out there will crank their creative juices when it comes to manufacturing products for consumers.
