VLC has many loyal fans out there, so it’s not surprising that the app was well received when released for the iPad and iPhone. The joy might be short lived though, as there might be a licensing issue with the whole deal. The port in the App Store was done by a company called Applidium, not the VLC developer VideoLAN which holds the copyright and licenses the code under the GPL. Now VideoLAN says that VLC for iOS includes the use of Apple’s FairPlay DRM and thus is in violation of the GPL. The developer has sent a notice to Apple requesting that the app be pulled and while it hasn’t been taken down just yet, we’re suggest you take this chance to download it if you’re interested, after all, who knows how long it’ll be available.
