In the future, will all our windows sport solar cells that will gather energy to keep our electronics beeping all day? The folks over at Oxford Photovoltaics have developed solar cells that can be printed directly onto glass, creating power-generating windows. The group managed to win a juicy $150,000 in prize money from the UK Technology Strategy Board’s “Disruptive Solutions Competition” to commercialize this technology. The dye-sensitive solar cell imitates photosynthesis using a dye that kicks loose an electron, starting a current. Oxford Photovoltaics is planning to make these new solar cells as durable as possible, with the hope that they will be able to last at least 20 years.
