Samsung Universal Flash Storage (UFS) memory card being developed
Samsung is said to be working on the first Universal Flash Storage (UFS) memory card that is based on a design developed by the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association. This new format is expected to be ready before the first half of 2011 is over, where it will theoretically be able to deliver 300Mbps data transfer speeds with future scalability. Of course, this would also compare rather favorably with the Toshiba’s recent announcement concerning its new Ultra High Speed I (UHS-I) which is capable of a maximum read rate of 95Mbps and write speeds of 80Mbps – which is roughly a third of UFS’ capabilities on paper. Will this mark the decline of the SD memory card format in all its variants? Only time will tell, but it is nice to know that proress is there for the future.
