Samsung has announced that mass production of its 3.5-inch 100GB and 200GB SSDs for the enterprise market has begun, a solution that is touted to help businesses lower their total cost of ownership over time as it increases performance and decreases power consumption. These drives are based on the 40nm single-level-cell (SLC) NAND flash chips and sport a 3Gb/s SATA interface, allowing the drives to perform read and write commands at 47,000 IOPS (inputs/outputs per second) and 29,000 IOPS respectively, which is 130X and 80X higher when compared to a 15K RPM hard drive. Enterprise-centric benefits include a reported 30 percent lower powerconsumption when compared to hard drives, end-t-end data protection, and advanced data encryption.
