AMD’s upcoming low power chip known as the Bobcat (sounds cute, doesn’t it?) will be rolling out sometime next year, where it is capable of running on under one watt of juice without missing a beat, while offering around 90% of the performance of today’s chips. Not only that, it also takes up less than half the silicon area, which will also directly translate to lower power consumption and reduced heat generation. It will not be the same as Intel’s Atom processor since the Bobcat core is a 64-bit chip. When it comes to the Ontario platform, it will pair the Bobcat processor core with an AMD graphics processor on the same chip, resulting in AMD’s system-on-a-chip debut. Does this mean we will see zippier portable devices in the future? Perhaps, and it will be interesting to see which niche market the Bobcat is capable of serving best. We’re thinking of tiny tablets or even super small netbooks, but the door’s open to anything at the moment.
